Man charged with murder of nurse and her two children, ‘all killed by asphyxiation’

A 52-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a mother and her two young children.
Saju Chelavalel was arrested after officers found Anju Asok, 35, Jeeva Saju, six, and Janvi Saju, four, at his address in Kettering, Northamptonshire, with serious injuries.
The mother and two children died a short time later.
Autopsies at Leicester Royal Infirmary revealed all three died of asphyxiation.
Mr Chelavalel is due to appear in Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Lead investigating officer, Detective Inspector Simon Barnes said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Anju, Jeeva and Janvi, for whom we are determined to seek justice.
“Incidents of this nature are incredibly disturbing and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who responded to the 999 call Thursday or who was involved in the subsequent investigation for the professionalism and respect they have shown.
“I would also like to thank the local community as we know how upsetting it is when an incident of this nature occurs. We will continue to have members of our Neighborhood Policing Team patrolling the area and I urge anyone with concerns to please speak to them.
Police previously confirmed that Anju was a nurse at Kettering General Hospital.
The hospital’s chief executive, Deborah Needham, said in a statement: “Yesterday we received the extremely worrying news that one of our colleagues has died in circumstances which are being investigated by Northamptonshire Police.
“Anju Asok was an internationally trained nurse who joined our KGH family in 2021, mainly working at Barnwell B – one of our orthopedic wards.
“She was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who was loved and respected by her dear friends and colleagues.
“All of our thoughts are with her friends and family as they come to terms with this sudden loss.”
CEO Pierino Geranio, who runs his uncle’s barber shop near the cul-de-sac where the incident happened, said: “You talk to people about it and they just can’t believe it.
“I come here every day to work and you never expect that – it’s so tragic. It’s absolutely awful, unbelievable.”
As well as cuddly toys, flowers were left next to the police cordon cordoning off Petherton Court.
An unsigned note accompanying one of the tributes read: “We were shocked and devastated by the news. The community will always remember this extremely sad and disturbing incident. REST IN PEACE. We hope you are in a better place.’
