BELLEVILLE, Illinois — A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old boy Wednesday in Belleville.
The shooting happened before 1 p.m. at Block 9000 of Lebanon Road. The police said they assume an accident.
According to police, Bobby J. Greathouse acted recklessly and had picked up a semi-automatic pistol with both hands. As Greathouse put his finger on the trigger, the gun’s barrel was pointed at the victim and the gun went off. The victim was shot in the head and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries.
Belleville Deputy Police Chief Lt. Col. Mark Heffernan said the 11-year-old remains in critical condition.
Heffernan said Greathouse and the victim are related. They are not currently looking for any other suspects.
St. Clair County prosecutors charged Greathouse with serious unlawful use of a gun and lack of a FOID card, obstructing justice for attempting to hide the firearm, and reckless conduct that caused bodily harm.
The Greathouse bond was priced at $900,000.
