A man with a gun was arrested outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and allegedly told police he intended to kill the conservative lawyer.

The man, who is believed to be in his mid-20s, was also carrying burglary tools near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home, sources with knowledge of the Washington Post investigation said Wednesday morning.

He was arrested on a street near Kavanaugh’s Montgomery County home and did not enter the residence.

Early evidence suggested the man was angered by the Supreme Court’s leaked draft advisory opinion, which expressed his intent to overthrow Roe v Wade, two sources told the newspaper. The leak in early May that the Conservative majority of the High Court plans to reverse the landmark 1973 decision guaranteeing the constitutional right to abortion has sparked protests across the country.

The California man was also upset by the number of recent mass shootings, the sources said.

Police were reportedly alerted that the man could be a threat to Kavanaugh. However, it was unclear who gave this tip.

The suspect was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe.

He was not immediately identified.

“The man was armed and threatened Judge Kavanaugh,” McCabe said. “He was taken to the Montgomery County Police Department 2nd Circuit.”

Kavanaugh lives in his Maryland home with his wife and two young daughters.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, nominated by then-President Donald Trump in 2018, was fraught with controversy when a former high school friend accused him of sexual assault. Kavanaugh is one of three justices Trump has installed on the Supreme Court, creating a conservative supermajority of six versus three liberal justices.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the man’s arrest was “exactly the kind of event that many have feared could fuel the horrific breach of court rules and norms.”
