Male Karen storms out of the dry cleaners after being asked a simple question

A TikToker sparked controversy this week after revealing footage of an elderly white man, dubbed male “Karen,” storming off after she asked him what appeared to be a normal question while he was working as a cashier at a dry cleaners.

The video, posted by TikToker Allison (@psychomush) and has over 1.1 million views, shows a shot of a man taking some clothes to a dry cleaner. The TikToker who works at the front desk asks the man if he is checking out his clothes.

“Just a side trip?” she asks.

“What else am I supposed to do with it?” says the man, before immediately storming out.

“No, do you have something to pick up?” Allison says as the man walks out the door. “Damn it, was that?”

“Hey, don’t come back!” she says as she goes outside to talk to him.

“Looks like someone hasn’t gotten laid in a while,” Allison captioned the video. “I swear I love Karen’s.”

In an interview with the Daily Dot, Allison claimed the man in the video had a history of being aggressive, storming out of the store and yelling at her and her co-workers multiple times. She said that on a previous occasion she calmed him down and resolved the situation. However, she said the opportunity chronicled in TikTok was the final straw.

“He started yelling at me like I was a kid or something. I had an immediate feeling that you weren’t going to treat me like a child,” Allison said. “He’s not having a bad day. He is like that by nature.”

Many users in the comments of the viral TikTok criticized the man for his rude behavior.

“Same type of man who says my generation is too sensitive,” commented one user.

“That was the most childish thing I’ve seen in a long time,” replied another.

Others were confused and said the worker was just doing her job.

“That was a normal question…why did he get so angry?” someone asked.

On the flip side, however, some users criticized the worker for her reaction.

“I wouldn’t even go outside to ask him why he’s mad, just let him go,” replied one user.

“You should have stayed inside, whether it was his second time or not. Stay professional,” replied another.

Allison told the Daily Dot receiving an onslaught of critical comments was stressful.

“Honestly, being on the receiving end of these comments kinda worries me,” Allison said. “Out of nowhere I started getting a lot of hate one night when I said I was the one who was being unprofessional … They started reaching out to me. To be honest, I thought about removing the video because I was starting to think maybe I was wrong.”

However, Allison said she recalls never swearing or yelling at a customer, only yelling at the man as he was leaving because he was far away. Additionally, she said she reflected on how the man had been disrespectful to her on several occasions.

“If I’m not respected, I will say something. I don’t care if I lose my job. People don’t understand that. They always say professional, but they can’t say that to someone who doesn’t care about losing their job. A lot of people my age don’t care about losing their job, so professionalism isn’t a thing,” Allison said.

Many users supported and defended TikToker’s response.

“The people who say keep it professional have never worked in customer service,” said one user.

“It’s good that you stand up for yourself. Sometimes people need vetting and know they are not welcome. Customers aren’t always right,” replied another.
