Luka Modric celebrated Chelsea as the “most difficult team to play” in the Champions League after Real Madrid slipped past the holders in a thrilling 5-4 quarter-finals win.

Coming from a 3-1 deficit from the first leg at the Bernabeu, the Blues put in an excellent performance on Tuesday night, with goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner putting them three goals ahead that night and 4: 3 in the lead were aggregate.

But Real and Modric showed their class, with Croatia’s Rodrygo leveling with an outrageous off-boot cross to send the game into overtime.

Chelsea had plenty of scoring chances again and at times sliced apart Real’s defence, but in the end it was Karim Benzema – who scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge last week – who had the final say.

A clean run and cross from Vinicius Junior landed perfectly on the Frenchman’s head, who nodded home to secure the 13-time European champions’ place in the last four.

Sometimes in the clash – and particularly in the second leg – Real rode their luck and Modric was afterwards full of praise for Chelsea’s performance, although he felt the Spanish giants were showing their big-game mentality and experience.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Modric said: “I think mister [Ancelotti] has made major changes and [the subs] well done, they had a huge impact on the game. Certainly experience plays an important role in this competition and I think it helped us a bit today.

“But Chelsea, we knew after the first game that we were going to have a tough game.

“Because for me they are the most difficult team to play against. I watch them often because of my friend Mateo [Kovacic]how they play and they’re a very tough physical team, very compact.

“We knew it was going to be tough – the way it was. But in the end we showed great character again, great will, great togetherness and we managed to turn it around, which is amazing. A defeat that is very sweet!’

He added: “Unbelievable to describe this game. We were dead until the goal we scored. Chelsea scored three goals, maybe the first one a little lucky from a distraction. I can’t say we played badly.

“They took their chances well and scored the goals. We haven’t given up. We kept believing, fighting and showing great character in the end. This stadium and the fans were very helpful when we lost 3-0. They have continued to support us and it has given us a boost to keep believing.’
