The Merseysiders confirmed their acquisition of the 22-year-old, who scored 26 league goals in just 28 games last season, earlier this week in a deal that could reach as much as £85million after various bonuses and add-ons.
Nunez follows in the footsteps of compatriots Suarez and Sebastian Coates, both of whom wore the No. 27 shirt – the same shirt number the young striker has now chosen.
Suarez’s legacy at Anfield played a role in Nunez’s decision to join Liverpool as the 35-year-old scored 82 goals in 133 games for the Reds after signing Ajax in 2011.
However, the elder Uruguayan doesn’t think his goal tally will be secure for long and has backed Nunez to improve his numbers by sending his international team-mate a message on social media after the transfer was confirmed.
Suarez responded to a post from Nunez’s drinking buddy, which he captioned “Forever Uruguayan”: “I was the first too! But I hope that ZIELE will put you first. Hug!!’
Suarez has been campaigning for his compatriot for some time and recommended Nunez to Barcelona when he was just a teenager, although the Catalan giants didn’t heed his tip.
Speaking to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero on his Twitch channel, Suarez recalled: “I recommended Darwin Barcelona when he was in Almeria. I have 15 years international experience. I know a thing or two about strikers.
“I told them, ‘Watch this one, it’s very good, it shows interesting things.’ They told me he was in Almeria and too young. But instead of paying 80, 90 or 100 million euros now, they would have paid 15 or 20 million euros and had him with them as a replacement.
In his revealing interview, Nunez revealed he would be reaching out to Suarez for advice on playing at Anfield, saying: “I haven’t had a chance to get in touch with him yet. But I’m sure when it all comes out on social media I’ll give him a call or send him a picture I took where he’s in a picture in the background.
“I’m going to send him this and we’re going to have a little chat and I’m going to ask him a lot of questions so he can offer his support and help because he’s a real reference for me because he’s a Uruguayan footballer who made history near Liverpool. But I’m sure I’ll get a chance to call and chat with him soon.’
