Long John Silver employee exposes unsanitary conditions

A Long John Silver employee has gone viral on TikTok after claiming his district manager is forcing workers to serve expired coleslaw at his location. He also says the manager regularly swaps out labels on expired food.

Worker and TikToker Shawn Reed-Bell (@shawn_reedbell) calls the practices “terrible” in his video, in which he shows bags of coleslaw sitting in the freezer days past their sell-by date.

A text overlay in TikTok indicates that the location of Long John Silver that the employee is talking about is in Clarksville, Indiana.

Shawn says in the video, “The best part is she gets us to sell expired coleslaw. Look at that date.” He then points the camera at the package and flashes the expiration date on the bag of coleslaw, saying it must be served by November 30th.

“Today is December 4th … and she’s making us sell this … all of this expired coleslaw,” he says. “And the district chief won’t let us throw it away, won’t let us replace it.”

Shawn claims the manager simply swaps out the labels on the restaurant’s produce instead of making it fresh.

“And all she does is switch labels,” he says. “She does. She doesn’t change the product, she doesn’t make it fresh. She changes labels. It’s terrible. It’s terrible. No labels. Check out these…… These should be completed by November 30th, all thrown out.”

He then cuts the camera to a tub of clams that are still sitting on the shelf 4 days past their expiration date.

In the comments, a viewer suggested that “sell by” and “use by” have different meanings.

“Not in a shop and workplace, that’s not it,” Shawn wrote in response. “I have 15 years of corporate management experience and am a certified chef in California. now indiana”

Others argued that vinegar in coleslaw would keep it from going bad, but Shawn clarified in another comment that the packets simply contain raw cabbage.

The USDA also states that consumption data does not necessarily indicate that the food will spoil or become unsafe by that point, but that the quality of the food’s taste may be compromised. The agency also associated food safety protocols for shelf-stable foods, and while spices and cooking oils can be considered shelf-stable, foods like cabbage and clams are not.

While this clip received over 53,000 views, Shawn also directed several follow-up videos exposing the conditions at his Long John Silver’s store.

In a TikTok, Shawn claims the store is skipping several foods throughout the day, including raw fish, shrimp and french fries.

Another follow-up video reveals the alleged lack of sanitation at the store. Shawn claims the back is littered with mouse droppings and covered in black mold.

“Look at that rat shit, all over the floor, in product boxes,” he says. “… They do not care.”

In another clip, Shawn claims the location stores its coleslaw cups upside down so they appear full.

Several viewers of Shawn’s series shared their disappointment and disgust at the state of the restaurant.

“Ew, I’ll never come back. Thanks for uncovering this!” wrote one user.

“All these nasty fast food videos and they want us to pay $15 a meal these days?!?” said another.

“It makes some people really sick,” claimed a third.

Others argued that Shawn is intentionally trying to lose his job by sharing these clips.
