London Ulez: Angry driver puts “F*** Ulez” license plates on his truck

One man has made his opposition to Ulez very clear by putting a swearing sign on his truck in protest at the forthcoming daily indictment.
The Ulez (Ultra Low Emission Zone) will expand to all boroughs of the city beginning in August, with hundreds of thousands more Drivers should expect a daily charge of £12.50.
Steve Cowan, 57, has said quite a bit about Ulez by putting fake license plates on the front and back of his Mitsubishi L200.
His vehicle’s license plate number now reads “F*** Ulez,” and he says he doesn’t care what the Mayor of London thinks.
Steve, from Dagenham, spent £33 on number plates from an online manufacturer after angering the extra cost he will soon be paying.
He claims he is faced with the charge “every time he leaves his driveway” to visit his 90-year-old mother, who lives in nearby Chingford.
“I’ve just spent five years funding the truck and working my ass off, then they bring that in,” Steve told MyLondon.
“My mum is in a care home, which means I have to pay the fee while going back and forth to see her.
“I also work across the water in Erith and have to pay £12.50 every time I walk out my door.”
Steve said he felt this was a “better way” to voice his opinion on the controversial policy.
“I didn’t really care what he did [Sadiq Khan] If I had my way, I would put them in all vehicles,” he added.
Christina Calderato, Director of Strategy and Policy at Transport for London, said: “Thousands of Londoners die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to toxic air, and this leads to children growing up with atrophied lungs and increases the risk of dementia in the elderly. The drivers themselves are at risk.”
She added: “London’s ulez is vital to addressing the triple threat of air pollution, the climate emergency and traffic congestion, and will ensure millions of people can breathe cleaner air.”
A number of drivers have found inventive ways to protest Ulez, including a man who strapped license plates to his back.
Engin Coban who lived in Catford in the south east Londonfor 38 years says he will be badly hit by the divisive new charges.
The handyman currently operates three vehicles, none of which are a complaint from Ulez – a van, a car and a motorcycle.
To protest the move, he has started wearing his own license plate on his body to “annoy” those who hand out fines without doing anything illegal.
