A man pretended to be helping a teenager after she fell down the stairs at a subway station, but instead dragged her into a basement where he sexually abused her.

Sharif Abbas, 31, took advantage of the 19-year-old after she fell down a flight of stairs at around 6am on June 16, 2019 at Bond Street station in central London.

The young woman broke her wrist in the fall and sustained a severe head injury that exposed part of her skull.

Abbas approached her as she sat down to recover, pretending to be a Transport for London employee.

He donned a high-visibility TfL jacket and, after telling her to wait for him, explored an empty basement nearby.

Instead of calling emergency services, Abbas took the heavily bleeding woman to the basement, where he told her he needed to examine her injuries, after which he attacked her.

When Abbas entered the basement of the building, he unknowingly set off a silent alarm, when police arrived at the scene, officers stumbled upon Abbas attacking the woman.

Officers found him standing behind the victim, his hands under her clothing and his jeans fly open.

He had taken them under a covered walkway where they were not visible to passers-by at street level, police said.

The woman was later taken to a west London hospital, where she was treated for her head injury and had wrist surgery.

She has since made a full recovery, according to the Met Police.

When questioned by detectives, Abbas said it never occurred to him to press an emergency button when he tried to help the woman.

He claimed he tried to call an ambulance but couldn’t get a signal. Abbas also claimed the victim asked him not to call an ambulance.

A pervert pretended to be helping a vulnerable teenager after she suffered a serious head injury - but instead dragged her down to a basement where he sexually abused her. Sharif Abbas, 31, abducted the 19-year-old victim after she fell down a flight of stairs in a central London tube station and was left bleeding and part of her skull exposed. Instead of calling emergency services, Abbas led the stricken woman, who also had a broken wrist, to a nearby basement, where he carried out a sex attack. The ailing defendant approached her as she sat down to recover and put on a TfL reflective vest, then after telling her to wait for him, she explored an empty basement of a nearby building.

However, CCTV showed that Abbas had his phone to his ear during the 45 minutes he abducted the woman and no emergency call was made nor did he provide first aid, police said.

The reflective vest he was wearing had been used when interviewing bus passengers two years earlier, but he was unemployed at the time of the attack.

Abbas told detectives he carries it with him when he goes running or encounters “an accident or something”.

Abbas, from Haringey, north London, was jailed at Southwark Crown Court yesterday, four years after he was found guilty of kidnapping and sexual assault at a previous hearing.

Judge Gregory Perrins sentenced Abbas, saying: “I have no doubt about it [the police officer] not present at this moment, you [Abbas] would have committed a more serious sexual assault.’

Detective Constable Nigel Pacquette, the investigating officer for the Met Police’s Central West Command Unit, described Abbas’ actions as “sinister” and “predatory”.

“It is unfortunate to take advantage of a seriously injured woman, especially at a time when she needs urgent medical attention,” he said.

“I realize that the details of this case and the predatory nature of criminals like Abbas will terrify many women. We are working hard to get this type of offender off our streets.’

DC Pacquette also recognized the sacrifice’s bravery.

He added: “The young lady targeted by Abbas has been incredibly brave, determined and patient throughout this investigation and trial.

“She no longer lives in the UK and was forced to return to the UK and self-quarantine to attend the trial due to Abbas’ not guilty plea.

“I applaud her actions in ensuring that other women are spared this man’s perverted attentions.”
