A suspect is being held in London for the murder of 87-year-old Thomas O’Halloran.
The 44-year-old man was arrested at an address in Southall in the early hours of this morning.
He remains in custody, where he is being questioned on suspicion of murder.
A murder investigation has been launched after the Irish pensioner was stabbed to death on his mobility scooter in broad daylight.
Witnesses said he was known for busking in the Greenford area and raising money for Ukrainians.
Commenting on the arrest, Detective Chief Inspector Jim Eastwood said: “I would like to thank the public for their overwhelming support following this horrific incident.
“An arrest has been made as a result of the release of a CCTV image yesterday and this investigation is progressing rapidly.
“Mr O’Halloran’s family have been kept informed of this development and will continue to be assisted by specially trained officers.
“I would reiterate your previous request that your privacy be respected by all as you continue to come to terms with your tragic loss.”
Mr O’Halloran was originally from Ennistymon, County Clare, in the west of Ireland.
The community expressed their “deep shock” at the death of the pensioner.
Mr O’Halloran is survived by his family including his sister, two brothers, nieces and nephews.
Local Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway said Mr O’Halloran visits Ireland regularly.
Mr Conway described it as “almost unbelievable” that an elderly man using a mobility scooter was attacked in daylight.
He said: “It’s really shocking. I sincerely hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
“Tommy, as he was known, left Ennistymon for London 71 years ago but was traveling home almost every year until about 10 years ago.
“He was a very popular man in the Greenford area of London, where he made music regularly and often busked for charity.
“Most recently he raised money for the Ukrainian community living in London.
“I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the O’Halloran family, both in London and Ennistymon, at this very difficult time for them.”
