Lombardi’s legacy: Boston’s own Vincent Lombardi visits Green Bay as Pats returns – Boston News, Weather, Sports

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (WHDH) – A legendary coach, a legendary trophy, and a man from Boston. What exactly do these three things have in common? They are all called Lombardi.

“My name is Vincent Lombardi. You hear your whole life, you know, ‘any relationship? Any relationship?” Lombardi said. “When I saw the schedule come out, I immediately thought, I know where I’m going!”

Raised in the East Boston/Revere area, Vincent Lombardi is not related to Vincent Lombardi, the former Packers coach who won five NFL championships in the 1960s and led the Green Bay Packers to the first two Super Bowls in the NFL -History led. Lombardi said he got his name because his parents were fans of the football icon after whom the Lombardi Trophy is named.

When the nation of patriots heads to historic Lambeau Field, so will Boston’s Lombardi. This is his first visit to the stadium where the former coach left his historic mark on football.

“My first time at Lambeau was on a bucket list [item]. You’re in Packers country, it’s great, the energy is great. People are great,” he said.

Lombardi said he saw the Super Bowl trophy, named after the Packers’ Hall of Fame coach, and even met members of the coach’s family.

“Billy Lombardi, one of his nephews, lives in Boston,” Lombardi said. “We were in a bar where he was paying and I said, ‘You’re a Lombardi, so am I!'”

Lombardi isn’t the only one who appreciates the football folklore at Lambeau Field.

“Every time they show the scoreboard, it’s Hudson, right? There’s, you know, there’s Lombardi. There’s Lambeau,” said Bill Belichick ahead of Sunday’s game. “You literally see the names after every game.”

This will be the Patriots’ first visit to Lambeau since 2014. Lombardi said he was confident in his team’s chances.

“I know Mac isn’t there,” Lombardi said. “But I think they’re going to come in, they’re going to hammer the ball, the ground and the football. Let’s see what happens – I think the Patriots will walk away with a win.”
