Logic Responds to Ice Cube Cover Backlash: “Who Gives AF*ck?”

A few years ago I wrote about why hip-hop doesn’t really do covers of past songs and albums like other genres do. I still think it’s pretty good, but last week rap fans got a lesson in how harshly a cover can be judged when Logic Ice Cube’s 1992 classic “It Was A Good Day” gave a melodic twist.

While Logic doesn’t see hip-hop as competition, many rap fans were appalled that he would deign to recreate such a seminal song from the hip-hop canon. However, he shrugged off the backlash on TikTok, claiming he’s already received the most important co-sign: one from Ice Cube himself.

In response to a comment suggesting making an entire album of similar covers, Logic posted a whole new video, saying, “It’s funny you’re saying that because I’ve been thinking about it… Everyone’s mad at me because.” I fucking have ice cube cover. Meanwhile, I texted Ice Cube and he was like, ‘Man keep it up brotha.’ Who gives a fuck [about the backlash]?”

He also agreed to a possible cover album and posited that he could put it to good use. “I should do a whole damn album and just do a whole album of damn hard 90’s records and call it that Logic greatest hitsand make ’em all pay, and get ’em released, and cater to all the legends and the GOATs and the 90’s greats.

While it seems that Logic needs a refresher on how publishing licenses work, it’s hard to be mad at him for working to turn a pretty negative situation into a helpful one, even if it doesn’t quite work the way he does seems to think (Many early hip-hop pioneers don’t own their publishers, so they probably wouldn’t get paid much, if anything, from a covers album). And while that might infuriate some rap fans, it certainly seems like it’s turning heads.
