Liz Truss is set to make a statement from Downing Street within minutes as more Tory MPs call for her resignation.

The infamous podium is set up outside the doors of number 10 – a strong sign that a big announcement is about to happen.

More than 100 Tory MPs have reportedly failed to submit letters of confidence as Ms Truss’ grip on the government crumbles.

That’s about twice what a vote of confidence under party rules would normally trigger – but leaders get a year of immunity from their election.

The Prime Minister has just had crucial talks with Sir Graham Brady, who chaired the 1922 Conservative backbench committee, which plays a key role in deciding whether she remains in office.

Truss has defied calls to resign, saying she is “a fighter, not a slacker.”

But their future in the corridors of power looks increasingly unlikely after yesterday’s sacking of their first chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, and their home secretary, Suella Braverman.
