Liverpool players past and present have spoken a great deal about strikers Darwin Nunez, who is expected to move to Anfield this summer.

The Uruguayan has reportedly reached an agreement with the Reds and Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently in talks with Benfica, with the Portuguese club looking to collect a transfer fee of around €100m for the 22-year-old.

Nunez is one of the top-rated young forwards in the world and Manchester United were also keen to get his signature but the appeal of playing under Klopp and the lure of Champions League football seem to have persuaded him to join Liverpool switch.

Among those who have sung praises to Nunez is current Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who played against the striker in the Champions League last season.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand back in May about the toughest strikers he’s faced in his career, the Dutchman said: “He’s a bit similar [to Erling Haaland] – very direct, fast, big, strong and quite difficult to play against.’

Luis Suarez, who scored 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool, also spoke highly of his compatriot in an interview with Gerard Romero on Twitch, while slamming his former club Barcelona for not catching him sooner.

“I recommended Darwin to Barcelona when he was at Almeria,” said the current Atletico Madrid forward.

“I have 15 years of international experience. I know a thing or two about strikers. And I told them: “Pay attention to this one, it’s very good, it shows interesting things”.

“They told me he was in Almeria and too young. But instead of paying 80, 90 or 100 million euros now, they would have paid 15 or 20 million euros and had him with them as a replacement.

Last season, Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions and was close to joining West Ham in January, but Benfica turned down the Irons’ £40m offer, a wise decision in hindsight given Liverpool likely to have to break his own transfer record £75m to sign him.
