Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino gave a delightfully disinterested response when asked about the competition Darwin Nunez at the club.

Firmino has been at Liverpool for seven years and has scored 101 goals in 333 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side and it was thought he would struggle for playing time this season as his contract expires next summer and he has to do it now compete for a place with Diogo Jota and Nunez.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and scored nine goals in 19 Premier League games in his debut season – hampered by injuries. Last season he scored 15 goals in 35 top-flight games.

But the Portugal international struggled again with injuries and only made his first appearance of the season against Everton on Saturday, while Nunez, who joined for £85million this summer, has scored just one goal in three.

Nunez was returning from a three-game ban against the Toffees following his red card against Crystal Palace and in his place has impressed Brazil international Firmino, who has three goals and three assists in five games this season.

Asked if he should compete with Nunez for a starting spot at Anfield, Firmino, 30, said: “[He] is a good friend and I think he will help us a lot.

“Obviously there will always be competition in any position but we are a team and what matters is what is best for Liverpool, to get the three points and what is best for the team.

“It depends on the manager’s decision, I will always give everything to have the best chance to play.”

Firmino has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup in an impressive spell at Liverpool since joining from Hoffenheim in 2015.

Meanwhile, it’s been a poor start to the season for Klopp’s side, who find themselves seventh in the top flight after their opening six games.

The Reds return to action on Wednesday as they kick-start their Champions League season with a trip to Napoli for their first group game.
