Liverpool reacted with anger Bayern Munich’s second, improved offer for Sadio Mane.
The Senegalese international has been a central figure in Jurgen Klopp’s side since moving from Southampton in the summer of 2016.
Mane has been scoring goals for the Merseyside club for over a century and is a leading contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or, having enjoyed success for club and country over the past 12 months.
The 30-year-old has just finished what is arguably his best personal season for Liverpool, with his versatility and ability to play across the whole forward line being a huge asset to his manager.
With only one year left on his current contract, Mane seems ready to seek a new challenge and is said to be keen to join the Bundesliga giants.
Liverpool flatly rejected Bayern’s opening offer and accordingly Der Spiegel dismissed the follow-up offer from the German club as a joke.
Bayern have reportedly made a formal offer of €23.5m.
That still falls far short of Liverpool’s valuation, while club officials have pointed out that many of the performance-related bonuses that come with a deal would be almost impossible to match.
Liverpool are said to be stunned by Bayern’s approach, especially as they themselves are demanding £50m from Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who is in an identical contract situation to Mane.
PSG and Real Madrid are also interested in signing Mane and Liverpool are in no mood to give in to Bayern’s tactics while the former Southampton striker has other heavyweight contenders.
Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has hinted to German media that he is ready to fly to England for direct negotiations with his Liverpool counterpart Julian Ward to break the impasse.
Liverpool would prefer to keep Mane’s services but assuming they get a fair price wouldn’t stand in his way.
The Reds have already identified several potential substitutes, including Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, while also monitoring Bukayo Saka’s situation at Arsenal.
