Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica who could end up costing €100m (£85.4m).

Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp made Nunez, 22, one of his top targets for this summer’s transfer window.

Nunez, on a six-year deal with Liverpool, enjoyed a breakthrough season for Portuguese club Benfica, scoring 34 goals in 41 games and impressing in the Champions League.

Manchester United have also expressed interest in signing the 22-year-old but Liverpool won the race and secured his €100m (£85.4m) services.

In a statement released on Monday, Benfica have confirmed Liverpool will pay €75m (£64.08m) upfront, plus a further €25m (£21.3m) in add-ons.

Nunez could therefore become Liverpool’s most expensive signing as his deal potentially exceeds the £75million Southampton paid for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.

Who is Darwin Nunez?

Nunez graduated from the academy of Uruguayan club Penarol and joined Spanish club Almeria in August 2019.

He spent just one season in the Segunda Division, scoring 16 goals in 32 games before Benfica secured his signature on a then-record €24 contract.

Nunez found success in Portugal, winning the bola de prata for top scorer in the Primeira Liga with 26 goals in 28 games.

It was his form during the 2021-22 season that made Nunez one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with Liverpool being joined by Manchester United and Real Madrid in the transfer battle.

The prospect of playing for a club vying for both domestic and European titles and the lure of playing under Jurgen Klopp seem to have convinced Nunez his future lies at Anfield.

Nunez is an athletic striker with an impressive array of qualities and an elite mentality. He looks ready for Klopp’s Liverpool and is leading the line, with Mohamed Salah on the right and Luis Diaz on the left.

Nunez has been partially signed as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is close to a move to Bayern Munich. Salah is expected to stay despite postponing a contract extension.

Klopp sees Nunez as an ideal replacement for Sadio Mane, who is expected to join Bayern Munich in the coming weeks despite Liverpool having already turned down two offers from the German champions.

Ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League tie with Benfica in April, Klopp said of Nunez: “Extremely handsome lad, huh? And also a decent player.

“Really good, really good. I knew it beforehand, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough fights against Ibrahima Konate.

“He was physically strong, fast and calm at the finish. In such situations, I always say that if he is healthy, he has a great career ahead of him.”

Liverpool won two trophies last season but hopes of a historic quadruple were dashed when Klopp’s side did was beaten to the Premier League title by Manchester City and lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.
