Live Updates | Ukraine says east under relentless attacks

Kyiv, Ukraine – A regional governor in Ukraine says the situation in a key city in the east has deteriorated.

Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said Monday fierce fighting continued in the city of Sieverodonetsk, the epicenter of the Russian offensive. He described the combat situation as “pretty dynamic”.

“Our defenders managed to launch a counter-offensive and liberate almost half of the city, but the situation has now deteriorated again,” Haidai told the AP. “Our boys are defending positions in the industrial area on the outskirts of town.”

“The shelling of Sievierodonetsk has intensified, (the Russians) destroying everything in accordance with their scorched earth tactics,” he claimed.

Haidai said the Russians are also intensively bombing nearby Lysychansk.

The Russians “have a tremendous amount of equipment and personnel, they’ve pulled in a lot of reserves,” he said. He added that they shelled a humanitarian center in Lysychansk and destroyed a bakery, and that 98 people left the city in the last 24 hours.

Haidai said a key highway between Bakhmut and Lysychansk was constantly shelled, though it remains in Ukrainian hands.

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France — Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made strong statements about the war in Ukraine at a commemoration ceremony Monday to mark the 78th anniversary of D-Day.

At the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, Milley said, “Kyiv may be 2,000 kilometers from here, they too are experiencing the same horrors right now, today, as French citizens did in World War II.”

He spoke in the presence of more than 20 World War II veterans and several thousand people who came to pay tribute to the day’s fallen.

“The world has come together to support Ukraine’s defense against a determined invader. Fighting in Ukraine is about honoring these WWII veterans,” he said.

“It’s about upholding the so-called global, rules-based international order created by the dead buried here in this cemetery.”

General Milley recalled the principle underlined in this order that “strong countries cannot simply invade small countries. Every country is sovereign and every country has the right to territorial integrity.”

MOSCOW – The Russian military says it has attacked a Ukrainian factory repairing armaments.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said Monday Russian warplanes fired long-range missiles to destroy a factory on the outskirts of the town of Lozova in the northeastern Kharkiv region, where armored vehicles were being repaired.

Konashenkov said that the Russian plane hit 73 concentration areas of Ukrainian troops and equipment, while Russian artillery hit 431 military targets. His claims could not be independently verified.
