Like Princess Diana’s The Crown storyline wasn’t entirely accurate

It’s not documentation! The Story of Princess Diana in Season 5 of The crown wasn’t entirely accurate—especially when it came to her panorama Interview, reveals a royal expert exclusively Us weekly.

“Look, it’s a drama. It’s a fiction based a little on fact,” is one royal expert Nick Bullen told Us of the latest installment in the Netflix series, which premiered in November.

The editor-in-chief of True Royalty TV explains that the interview with Martin Bashir, which originally took place with Diana in 1995, was not presented as truthfully as possible The crown.

“Practically everything has – certainly – expanded the brand,” Bullen says of the two-episode arc. “I don’t think they even went far enough to see how Bashir came to be interviewed. I mean they kind of touched it, you know, it was incredibly fraudulent what was going on there.”

Diana made headlines in 1995 after sitting down with Bashir panoramas detailed interview. During the conversation, the princess spoke openly about their relationship King Charles III after their separation in 1992. (The duo finalized their divorce in 1996, a year before Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.) Bashir died in 2009.

In November 2020, Diana’s eldest son, Prince William, spoke out in support of the BBC’s investigation into Bashir’s questionable tactics while interviewing the late king. BBC issued a public apology to Charles, 74, and his two sons, William, 40, and Prince Harryand Diana, in July, after discovering that Bashir had “deceived” Diana throughout the year panorama Discussion.

While the Netflix series addressed Diana’s desire to return to Queen Elizabeth II’s favor after the disastrous interview, Bullen reveals Us that the late Princess of Wales was much more repentant when she appeared on camera.

“I think in the first few days after that [the interview] She really felt like she had her voice out there,” he says. “She also believed what Bashir told her about the security services listening to her and what was going on. I think as more clarity came it became more and more obvious that it was a big mistake.”

The royal lover notes that Diana ultimately “realized that she shouldn’t do it” and “absolutely” regretted her decision.

“To be fair what The crown correct was the fact that Karl Spencer, her brother, had concerns about Bashir before the interview and was trying to convince Diana that maybe this wasn’t the right path,” Bullen continues. “As we all saw on the show, Bashir faked bank statements and tried to claim that people were being paid by security. And when someone shows you this, you probably believe it, even if you’re not already paranoid about what’s going on. I think she regretted it.”

The journalist also criticized The crown for season five episodes that “damage the monarchy,” including storylines about Charles in the ’90s.

“If Charles does the handover of Hong Kong, it seems he will take over [Queen Consort Camilla] for a holiday on the Royal Yacht Britannia. It’s just not true,” Bullen claims. “The idea that Diana would meet Mohamed Al Fayed at the Windsor Horse Show. Not true. The idea that Princess Margaret and the Queen are fighting over Peter Townsend – isn’t true.”

He concludes: “What The crown is very clever in that it takes enough facts to make up a version of the truth. I think people need to keep an eye on this as a drama based on real events. But that’s the danger… how far real life events go.”
