Liberal ministers and MPs express concern over bitter internal feuds

Ministers and backbenchers are increasingly frustrated by the protracted public feud between Transport Secretary David Elliott and Treasurer Matt Kean. Warning that the spit is another unwanted noxious distraction for the government under pressure.

The uneasiness was fueled by an extraordinary new attack from Elliott, who on Sunday claimed Kean’s foray into the long-running industrial dispute between the government and rail unions had caused a breach of trust between the two sides. Elliott likened the treasurer and deputy leader of the NSW Liberals to a “boy” doing “a man’s job”.

The government and unions continue to bicker over a new company agreement and the future of a multi-billion dollar train fleet after months of negotiations, with several Liberal MPs warning that the row between Kean and Elliott did nothing to resolve the standoff.

Industrial Relations Secretary Damien Tudehope briefed Cabinet on Monday about the industrial dispute, stressing that delays in finding a solution had nothing to do with Kean. Elliott missed the briefing because he was unwell.

NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union secretary Alex Claassens said he had found it difficult to trust the government when ministers appeared to be at odds.

“There is an innate distrust between the RTBU and various NSW ministers because they keep turning us upside down,” Claassens said.

Claassens said he told NSW government ministers at a meeting last week that the union would not trust any verbal promises made by the government.

“We have ministers fighting each other,” he said. “There is nothing the union can do but lock itself into a position where we have to have a deed signed by the Prime Minister.”
