Lexington native feels lucky to be alive after tornado tore through apartment building

BLUE BACK, Ky. (FOX 56/ WKYT) – Answer Lexington native told us he was lucky to be alive after a tornado tore through his apartment building.

“One thing that I will never forget,” he said, “if you are at Bowling Green, now is the time to take shelter,” said Mohammed Ahmad.

Ahmad is a native of Lexington, and is currently a sports reporter for WBKO in Bowling Green. He describes the terrifying moments before the tornado tore through his city.

“I used to peek outside to see what was going on. The door swings open. I had to try to squeeze my body into it to make it close. That’s when I knew it wasn’t good. Ahmad said.

Seconds later, he said, the walls of his apartment began to shake.

“So I just ducked under the kitchen counter. I shouted. This is terrible. And this was quite difficult, but honestly I thought I was going to die in that moment,” said Ahmad.

Debris flew through the walls of Ahmad’s bedroom, but he said the damage was nothing compared to the rest of his street.

“I saw houses destroyed, cars overturned. People were running in the streets, not knowing what was going on,” said Ahmad.

As soon as it was safe, Ahmad sought more stable shelter. Those are the scenes he sees when the last light of day will stick with him forever.

“I looked back and saw my apartment, and the three apartments below, it was gone, destroyed. You wouldn’t think anyone was ever there,” said Ahmad.

One thing that didn’t surprise Ahmad was how quickly his community and the people of Kentuckia came together to help each other.

“People are saying, ‘what do you need, how can I help?’ Ahmad said.

Ahmad said he’s lucky to be able to stay with friends until he finds a more permanent solution.
