Lexington health officials predict another COVID-19 case will rise after the holiday season

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX56/ WKYT) – It’s almost a week until Christmas.

With more people gathering during the holidays this year, health officials say it’s important for people to protect themselves against COVID-19.

Around this time last year, the number of COVID-19 infections increased dramatically, health officials said. They predict it will happen this year.

In fact, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has seen cases increase over the past four weeks.

In early December, Lexington was receiving an average of about 80 new cases per day, but now averaging 120 or more cases per day, spokesman Kevin Hall said.

Health officials predict the omicron variant will soon come to Kentucky but remain worried about the delta variant. Hall said about 80% of hospitalizations due to covid are due to unvaccinated or under-vaccinated.

He said those who attend holiday parties should be vaccinated and boosted health.

“If you have people at high risk, which are older members of our families who have certain underlying health conditions, make sure you are taking steps to protect them. they include wearing masks, getting them to wear masks, but again, vaccines are the first and best step,” Hall said.

Health officials say it’s important to stay vigilant as this is also flu season. Flu cases doubled in Lexington last week, with 35 laboratory-confirmed cases. Hall said there are probably many other flu cases out there that go unreported.

Health officials recommend that people stay home if they feel sick.
