Lewis Hamilton wants George Russell to take on the role of Mercedes’ F1 guinea pig

Lewis Hamilton hopes George Russell can take on the role of guinea pig at Mercedes in the second half of the 2022 Formula One season as the team tries to get back to the front of the field.

The Silver Arrows have been the fastest team in Formula 1 every year since 2014 but were off the pace this year and unable to compete for victories with leaders Red Bull and Ferrari.

The Brackley-based team’s W13 car was plagued with porpoise issues for most of the season, meaning experimentation with set-ups was necessary at each track for the first nine rounds of the season to try to match their challenger’s performance to enhance.

Porpoising is the name for the aerodynamic quirk that sees the new generation of F1 cars bounce violently at high speeds, causing drivers’ heads to bang wildly while intense loads are sent through their spines .

Mercedes have suffered from the problem more than the other nine teams in F1 and Hamilton has mostly been doing the more experimental set-up testing since the start of the season, with the team apologizing to him after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when he found himself using an aggressive set-up left back pain so severe that he struggled to get out of the car at the end of the race.

After Hamilton struggled with his car’s set-up in free practice ahead of last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix before eventually finishing third, Hamilton is hoping Russell can help lighten the load.

“Yeah, maybe George can do the experiments in the second half of the season!” Hamilton joked. “We’re just trying to work… we’re just trying to move forward as a team. And yes I think we’ll be a bit more cautious going forward about doing too many experiments as it really gets you through the weekend, especially if you only have practice one and two in the dry and don’t get it for example an FP3.

“So yes, I think there are a lot of lessons learned from this weekend and improvements we can make to move forward. But you know, really great pace [in Canada]. And it’s so nice to see that it wasn’t always like that with this car, so it’s nice to fight a bit with her today, her or him, whatever you call a car.

Hamilton clinched only his second podium of the season at Montréal after initially aiming to fight for a potential eighth World Championship before the start of the campaign. Now the 37-year-old hopes to win the British Grand Prix next time.

“And I really hope to move to Silverstone… it’s such an important race for us and for me and so I really hope that… I just want to fight with these guys.

The 2022 Formula 2 campaign continues with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone over the weekend of July 1-3.

Toto Wolff has ‘lost his shit’ in a meeting with Christian Horner over the F1 porpoise debate.
