Lewis Hamilton has backed the Just Stop Oil protesters who managed to get onto the track at Silverstone on Sunday, saying ‘make the boys big’.

A group of the activists managed to break onto the track and sit there during the British Grand Prix after a red flag was waved just after Zhou Guanyu’s horrific crash.

Luckily no one was hurt by the protest, despite it being an extremely dangerous thing, but Hamilton has supported environmentalists in taking action.

When asked to clarify his initial reaction to the protesters, Hamilton explained: “All I was saying was make the protesters big. I love that people are fighting for the planet and we need more people like her.”

The British driver finished third at Silverstone, with Carlos Sainz winning a grand prix for the first time and the Spaniard showing much less support for the protesters.

“People have the opportunity to express themselves because it is their right, but I don’t think it’s the best way to jump onto a Formula 1 circuit,” said the Spaniard.

“You put yourself and the drivers in danger. You have to be more careful because you could get killed and cause an accident.’

A statement on Twitter by Just Stop Oil promoting the protest read: “A group of Just Stop Oil supporters stormed the track at #BritishGP2022

“If you’re more outraged by this disruption than by our world being burned before our eyes, then you need to get your priorities right.

“We are demanding that the Government halt new oil and gas projects in the UK immediately and we will continue to disrupt sport, cultural events and oil until that demand is met.

Northamptonshire Police Events Commander Tom Thompson said: “I am really disappointed that this group of people ignored our pre-race day warnings and made the incredibly dangerous decision to take to the track.

“We offered to host a peaceful event at the circuit, but instead they chose to risk the lives of the drivers, marshals and volunteers. It’s incredibly disappointing that anyone would make the decision to do this. Luckily we had plans and the group was quickly removed and arrested by our officers. All seven are in custody.’
