Lesley Lokko to host Venice Architecture Biennale 2023 – ARTnews.com

The Venice Architecture Biennale in Italy selected Lesley Lokko curated the 2023 edition, making her the first person of African descent to lead the world’s top architecture every two years. Dezeen report that she was also the first black architect to hold the biennial, as well as one of the few women to ever manage it. Lokko’s biennial will open May 20, 2023.

Like its sister, biennial devoted to the arts, the Venice Architecture Biennale is largely curated by white European-based architects. The move could indicate a long-overdue willingness to diversify the biennial superiors.

Born in Dundee, Scotland and raised in Ghana, Lokko has been influential in academia, where she supports the view that architecture cannot be separated from race. In 2000, she wrote White Paper, Black Mark: Race, Space and Architecture, and she has written several novels. She has also founded two architecture schools in Africa: a graduate program at the University of Johannesburg and the Africa Futures Institute in Accra, where she currently works. She also founded FOLIO: Contemporary African Architecture Magazine.

Lokko made headlines last year when she resigned from the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at City University of New York, where she began as a director in 2019. Talk to Architectural Profile, she said her resignation came after a lack of support. “The lack of respect and empathy for Black people, especially Black women, caught me off guard, although it was by no means unique to Spitzer,” she added. “I suppose I would say in the end that my resignation is a profoundly self-defeating act.”

In a statement about her appointment with the Venice Architecture Biennale, Lokko hinted that her edition will in some way address the significant changes that have affected the world over the past few years. “After two of the most difficult and divisive years in living memory, architects have a unique opportunity to show the world what we do best: come up with ambitious and bright ideas. It helps us envision a shared future that is more optimistic and equitable,” she said. “Speaking to you from the youngest continent in the world, I would like to thank the President [Robert] Cicutto and the entire La Biennale di Venezia team for this bold, courageous choice. ”
