Chelsea have been told they will have to pay a world record fee if they hope to end the impasse with Leicester City and sign Wesley Fofana before the transfer window closes.

Thomas Tuchel has spent a significant part of the final season rebuilding a defense that lost the services of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while Marcos Alonso is also on the verge of retirement.

Kalidou Koulibaly already seems an ideal replacement for Rudiger, while Marc Cucarella will provide competition for Ben Chilwell, who has just returned from a long-term injury.

However, finding a replacement for Christensen was far from easy as Chelsea grew frustrated in his attempts to sign Jule Kounde, who eventually chose Barcelona after opting to leave Sevilla.

Chelsea have since focused on Kounde’s compatriot Fofana, who excelled in the Premier League after joining the Foxes from Saint Etienne two years ago.

Leicester have endured a difficult summer of their own and are struggling to retain their prize money. Long-time goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel left for Nice earlier this month while James Maddison is attracting interest from Newcastle.

Chelsea have already rebuffed two offers for Fofana but Leicester appear to be softening their stance and will sell the 21-year-old if they receive an offer that exceeds the world-record fee Manchester United paid them for a defender in Harry Maguire, according to The Telegraph three years ago.

Spending more than £80m is unlikely to deter new owner Todd Boehly, who is determined to arm Tuchel with a squad capable of challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the title.

Asked yesterday if there was a cut-off point for Leicester to consider offers, Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said: “That will be a matter for ownership, the final decision will be theirs.

“Even now it would be too late to find replacements, but it’s certainly something that the later it goes on, the more difficult it becomes.

“At least another year here would be very important for his development, but he is quite calm and relaxed about the situation.

“He’s aware of the interest. He understands where we are as a club and where we see him. He’s just doing well with his work and training and whenever there’s communication we can talk.’
