Leah Marlene has been an American Idol favorite since her audition.

Getting it into the top 5 had a lot more to do with her singing than her likeability, however.

The self-proclaimed odd girl gained many fans early on due to her quirky personality. This could have gotten old and a “personality” can only get that far on a show like American Idol.

What happened is that Leah went from being that weird girl who made ends meet thanks to her contagious personality to a singer who could take on anyone just because of her voice.

She is in the top 5 because Leah Marlene is a great singer.

Leah Marlene explains what American Idol is like

While still in competition, Leah Marlene did an interview and talked about what it’s like to be on American Idol.

Leah spoke to me Parade.com about her appearance on the show and how what people see doesn’t always match reality.

“I still feel like it’s Hollywood week,” Leah told Parade.com. “I think we’re all in this together. It doesn’t feel like what it looks like on TV. It just feels like we are a family doing what we love with this incredible team around us.”

While American Idol features these singers compete against each other and are mostly kept separate, apart from sitting close together when being rescued or waiting to sing, Leah said it’s a lot more than that.

She said all singers have a great opportunity to perform in front of global audiences with the highest possible production value – possibly higher than some of them will ever have again. She said that means they cheer each other on when they’re in the room.

“I think we’re all remarkably grateful, like no words for how grateful we are to be here,” Leah said. “And so we all take in each moment because we don’t know when it’s going to end. And so we just appreciate the shared experience.”

Leah talks about how hard American Idol is to produce

She also told Parade.com that she never realized how much hard work goes into the production of each episode — even though she did it watched American Idol for years. She pointed out that there are several people behind the scenes who make the show look as good as it does.

“There are so many people behind the scenes that you don’t even realize it, but they are literally the reason we grow the way we are,” continued Lead. “They are like our advisors and they also advise us in our careers and in our decisions on the show. I wish they could all just get on stage and get all the credit in the world for really being behind this show.”

She concluded by saying that they really are part of the DSDS family – from the top 5 to the singers who have already left. They all have connections with the singers that came before and will probably have a connection with singers that come after them.

American Idol airs Sunday nights at 8:7c on ABC.
