Lautaro Martinez has struck a fresh blow Chelsea on the hunt for a new striker after confirming he wants to stay at Inter Milan this summer.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a successful season in Serie A last season, scoring 21 goals in 35 games and scoring for Argentina in the Cup of Champions against Italy at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Thomas Tuchel is believed to be looking for a new centre-forward and has been linked with a move for the in-form Martinez, whose contract runs until 2026.

However, the Argentine – who had an excellent partnership with Romelu Lukaku – doesn’t expect to keep San Siro in the transfer window despite interest from Chelsea and Tottenham.

After his country’s 3-0 win against Italy, he said: “My plan is clear: I really want to stay at Inter next season.

“I haven’t received any communication from the club to date, I want to continue at Inter next season.”

Martinez’s announcement is a setback for the Blues, who are desperate to improve their attack after a poor performance in front of goal last season.

Lukaku, signed from Inter for £97m last summer, has only scored eight goals in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech each scored just four, adding to the attack’s disappointing return.

All three players have been linked with exits this summer as Tuchel looks to add more ruthlessness in attack.

Alongside Martinez, the German is reportedly interested in Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, although the 33-year-old is believed to favor a move to Barcelona.

Elsewhere, concerns remain in defence, with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger leaving on free transfers, leaving only Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Trevor Chalobah at centre-backs.

The west Londoners are said to be interested in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Paris Saint-Germain’s Presnel Kimpembe.

With both players expected to pay significant fees, it remains to be seen how much more can be invested in Chelsea’s attack.
