Las Vegas Raiders 2022-23 Season Preview: Where Will the Dice Fall?

Headlines have followed the Raiders like a bad odor for the past year, both good and bad. After a massive off-season, can they finally let their football do the talking?

The scary thing about the Raiders is that their strength is only going to get stronger this season. Las Vegas had the sixth-most passing yards in the NFL last season, in a high-volume system, and with Davante Adams coming to Vegas in a blockbuster trade, it’s hard to imagine that number going any lower. With Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow still around, this should be a top 3 passing offense.

Last season, Las Vegas conceded the second most penalties in the league, resulting in the most conceded penalty yards in the entire NFL. Little things like sticking on first down and interfering with defensive passes on third down have been killers for Vegas all season and something they need to drastically improve on.

All the Las Vegas talk during the off-season revolved around Davante Adams, but some people forget they took another big step in getting Chandler Jones free reign. Jones exploded at the start of the 2021 season with five sacks against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 before struggling with injuries in Arizona. On the other side of Maxx Crosby, if he can stay healthy, this will be a dynamite duo.

Who is under pressure?
The Raiders ran back Josh Jacobs in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. They turned down his fifth-year option, meaning he most likely won’t be a raider after this season. Although he wasn’t used much on the high-volume pass offense, he wasn’t efficient when given a chance to touch the ball. He’s averaged no more than four yards per carry over the past two seasons. If he wants a decent contract to play somewhere else, he has to produce.

Playing in football’s toughest league isn’t going to be easy, but this is a playoff team from last season that has improved significantly in the off-season. Whenever you can have a 1000-yard receiver (Hunter Renfrow) as a third option, you’ll score points, and their defense seems to have taken a big step forward, taking auto starters from Chandler Jones, Jayon Brown, and Rock Ya Sin have taken over.
