Lancashire Police have put the area under lockdown in the latest development of the mysterious case, more than three weeks after the 45-year-old went missing.

A police helicopter circled over undergrowth in St Michael’s on Wyre.

Meanwhile, at least two divers were spotted entering a stretch of the River Wyre earlier today.

A photographer told The Mirror: “It all happened so quickly. The police have cordoned off all the streets. There are police drones and cars everywhere.

A man and woman were seen pointing to a riverside bush while the search was ongoing.

It is still unclear why the measures were taken and why divers are re-examining the water.

But it comes after news the force brought in a top investigator from the National Crime Agency (NCA) to bring the case to a conclusion.

Nicola was last seen at 9:10am on January 27, taking her usual route along the river with her dog Willow.

Earlier that morning she had dropped her two young daughters off at school.

Her phone – still connected to a work call – was found around 20 minutes later on a bench overlooking the riverbank while her spaniel was running around, but Nicola was nowhere to be found.

The main working hypothesis was that she fell into the river after accidentally dropping her dog’s ball and drowned.

Investigators continue to assume that no third party is involved in the case.

But friends and family have insisted Nicola is a “good swimmer”, adding that there was “absolutely no evidence” to support this theory.
