Knife-wielding man killed in Hallandale Beach liquor store shooting; Officer injured – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – A shootout involving police at a Hallandale Beach liquor store left one man dead, investigators said, ending a violent and disruptive chain of events that also took an officer to the hospital.

A newly emerged cellphone video captured the moments leading up to the moment a Hallandale Beach police officer opened fire on Saturday night at Goldstar Liquors, which is located in a mall on East Hallandale Beach Boulevard.

It all started less than two blocks away, according to investigators, when the knife-armed subject caused some type of disturbance around 6:20 p.m. at the Argo Restaurant at the 2300 block of Hallandale Beach Boulevard

Witness Vlad Gold said he was celebrating Mother’s Day with his family when he saw the man, pulled out his cell phone and began recording him.

“He was under the influence of something,” Gold said.

Gold said a responding officer attempted to de-escalate the situation but eventually had to use a taser to subdue him.

An anonymous witness also shared cell phone video with 7News. It shows the man throwing punches at the officer after being tasered.

“After groping the suspect, the suspect just stood there, ripped out his wires and looked like he was going to do something to the officer,” Gold said. “The officer disengaged, backed away, and the suspect ran, ran right past our table, right next to my sister.”

Police said the man came across Goldstar Liquors and at one point an altercation broke out between him and the officer.

“At what time, [the subject] could injure the officer in the face,” Hallandale Beach Police Chief Megan Jones said.

After another officer responded to the liquor store, detectives said, an unknown number of shots were fired inside the store.

The knife-wielding person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police described him as a 25-year-old man.

Gold, who said he feared for the lives of his loved ones, believes officers did the right thing.

“The officer did everything in his power without resorting to violence,” he said. “I worried about the people who were in the restaurant. I was worried about my family.”

It remains unclear whether only one or both officers surrendered their weapons.

Cellphone video captured the injured officer as he was led to a squad car by another officer. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for cuts to his face.

Late Saturday night, 7News cameras captured an active police presence at the mall. The crime scene has since been cleared up.

Both officers involved have been suspended with pay while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.

On Sunday evening, police confirmed the injured officer was discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

Both officers wore body cameras and were rolling during the incident.

As of Sunday evening, police have not released the names of the subject or officers involved.
