Kid Cudi has revealed he suffered a stroke during his rehab that affected his speech and movement for several months.
In October 2016, the rapper — who was recently embroiled in a high-profile feud with former boyfriend Kanye West — announced that he had checked himself into a rehab facility.
In a statement posted to Facebook at the time, the Day ‘n’ Nite musician shared that he had “depression and suicidal thoughts” and felt like he’d “lived a lie” while “not at peace.”
In a new interview, Cudi – real name Scott Mescudi – explained that “everything sucked” after his stroke, for which he was hospitalized.
For months, his speech and movements were impaired, the 38-year-old told Esquire.
After months in physical rehab, Cudi auditioned for a Broadway play called Lobby Hero the following year, reading alongside Superbad star Michael Cera.
After memorizing a significant amount of dialogue for the audition, Cudi was “happy” that he had “proved” himself that he was capable of taking the challenge, despite the fact that another actor was eventually chosen for the role became.
“I’ve proven to myself that I can do it. That’s what I needed at the time,” he said.
‘I was happy. Damn, my brain is still strong. I didn’t belong in the shit that happened.”
What is a stroke?
Stroke, which is life-threatening, occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off, the NHS outlines.
The main symptoms of a stroke are summarized under the acronym “FAST” which stands for “Face, Arms, Speech and Time”.
A person who has a stroke may experience the following symptoms:
- Your face falls to the side or the inability to smile
- An inability to raise both arms
- Weakness or numbness in one arm
- slurred speech
- Difficulty understanding when someone else is talking to you
The NHS is urging the public to call 999 if they notice any of these key symptoms.
Last month, during a performance at a music festival, Cudi stormed off the stage after fans kept throwing objects at him.
After replacing West as headliner at the Rolling Loud event in Miami, the rapper could be heard saying in a clip, “If I get hit by another damn thing, if I see another damn thing here on this damn stage, I’ll go.” Don’t fuck with me.’
When another object was thrown onto the stage, Cudi immediately walked away while some of the crowd jeered and booed.
