Kentucky: School bus accident hospitalizes 18 students and driver

A school bus fell over a embankment on Monday morning, injuring 18 children and the diver.

The bus carried students to Magoffin County Public Schools in Salyersville, Kentucky. Driving west on Kentucky Route 40, the bus somehow managed to swerve over a ditch and onto an embankment, landing on its side and knocking over a utility pole.

The school the bus went to was not identified, but they confirmed that the bus runs on this street every day.

The school district confirmed that all of the children and the driver on board were transported to local hospitals by either ambulance or rescue helicopter.

“The ages ranged from elementary school to high school,” Superintendent Chris Meadows said. The bus carried students to several elementary schools and to the regional middle and high schools.

Four people are still considered critical – the driver and three children. WLEX reports. At least two of these students and the driver were thrown from the vehicle in the accident.

The driver was unable to answer questions when questioned by authorities about the accident.

The other students had “varying degrees of injury severity,” Magoffin County Schools explained.

Governor Andy Beshear deployed the Kentucky State Police to investigate the circumstances of the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

“We are really in the early stages of the investigation,” said State Trooper Michael Coleman.

“Kentucky, we have tough news,” Gov. Andy Beshear said on Twitter Monday morning. “Please pray with me for everyone involved.”

“My prayers are with the children and the bus driver who were injured in the school bus accident this morning,” Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell said shortly after the news broke. “Thank you to the Kentucky State Police and our other first responders who acted quickly to assist those involved in the accident.”
