Kentucky Derby Odds, Picks, Field 2022: Zandon, Epicenter Predictions by experts who met Medina Spirit

Veteran trainer Eric Reed will start his first runner at the Run for the Roses when the starting gate for the 2022 Kentucky Derby opens at Churchill Downs on Saturday. After Ethereal Road retires from Friday morning’s race, Reed’s Rich Strike, originally a replacement for the 20-horse field at the 2022 Kentucky Derby, is moving in. Bred by the legendary Calumet Farm, Rich Strike has one win in seven career starts and is a 30-1 long shot in the odds for the 2022 Kentucky Derby. Chad Brown-trained Zandon is the 3-1 favorite on the morning line in of the 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup, while Epicenter is second pick at 7-2. The postal time for the 2022 Kentucky Derby is 6:57 p.m. ET. The date for the 2022 Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 7th. Before you start making predictions for the 2022 Kentucky Derby, see how astute race reporter and analyst Michelle Yu did the 2022 Kentucky Derby selection and analysis.

Few people in racing are as connected as Yu. An on-air presenter and reporter who has provided race analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders’ Cup, Yu has spent his entire life racing. Before her television career, she worked for coaches Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She is also married to Santa Anita resident trainer Ryan Hanson.

She also has tremendous handicap chops. In the 2011 Kentucky Derby, she correctly beat Animal Kingdom and won 21-1. At the 2017 Breeders’ Cup, she beat Wuheida 11-1 from afar to win the Filly and Mare Turf. Last year, in a wide-open Kentucky Derby, she declared Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, 12-1 as the winner.

Since joining SportsLine in November, her picks have cashed in six out of 12 races, including the Exacta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Anyone who has followed her is way up there.

Top Kentucky Derby 2022 Predictions, Expert Analysis

A surprise: Yu eclipses Messier despite being one of the top favorites in the 2022 Kentucky Derby at 8-1. In fact, Yu says Messier barely cracks the top 10. The three-year-old colt’s speed decreased during his Kentucky Derby prep races, with his Beyer Speed Figure plummeting from 103 at the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on February 6 to 99 at the Santa Anita Derby two months later.

The Santa Anita Derby was also Messier’s first race at 1 1/8 miles, and the extra length caused the colt to slow late and finish second to Kentucky Derby opponent Taiba. Yu believes the 1 1/4 mile track at Churchill Downs will see Messier slow down the track yet again, despite being one of the 2022 Kentucky Derby favorites to compete in the race.

Yu made her 2022 Kentucky Derby selection for Epicenter, the second favorite at 7-2. Epicenter was named after an earthquake around the owner’s naming deadline and was only beaten twice in six career starts. In his last race, he showed a new dimension by gauging the pace in the Louisiana Derby before heading home with a 2 1/2 length win.

His four career wins totaled more than 15 lengths. He has won his last two starts by more than five combined lengths. “If I have one hit on him, it would be that he hasn’t been challenged lately, and I like a horse with guts to throw it,” says Yu.

Yu also has a strong read on Zandon, the top favorite in the latest 2022 Kentucky Derby odds at 3-1. Named after a hunting buddy of owner Jeff Drown, Zandon has won more than $713,000. He started his career by winning a six-mile sprint on his debut. In his only other start in 2021, he lost a stretch fight to Mo Donegal in the 1 1/8 mile brake stakes, although stewards strongly considered disqualifying Mo Donegal for interference at the track.

In two starts this year, Zandon has shown less tactical speed, but some of that can be attributed to problems exiting the starting gate. In blue grass, he was pushed back to last place before unleashing his patented late kick to win. “His bluegrass win was very impressive and that finishing kick is a dangerous weapon,” Yu told SportsLine.

How to Make 2022 Kentucky Derby Picks, Betting

Yu’s top pick is an overlooked horse that has the “speed to press and top connections.” Yu is also high on a tremendous long-range shot, which is her must-use-in-exotics horse. She said this colt “has shown race after race that he belongs in the Kentucky Derby.” She’s including these horses in her 2022 Kentucky Derby bets, and you should too. She only tells SportsLine which horses to bet on.
