Independent woman! Kelly Rowland didn’t mince words after a radio DJ discussed her “position” as “second”. beyonce.

“You happen to be standing next to the brightest light on planet Earth. You think big boi from Outkast has a hard time being next door Andre [3000]you’re dating Beyoncé,” Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg continued the Destiny’s Child alum, 41 Ebro in the morning with Laura Stylez and Rosenberg on Wednesday November 16th. “And not only didn’t you have to fight it, you really loved the position you were in and took it seriously.”

The “Dilemma” singer, 41, responded to Rosenberg – who also credits her “ability to play behind Beyoncé” – with a candid and confident response.

“Here’s the thing: light attracts light. i am light I’m a beautiful brown glowing light,” said the Survivor artist. “So I don’t think anyone’s light dims anyone else’s light. I think when other people start comparing you I think it shows how weak of themselves they are.”

She continued, “I no longer let someone else try to dim my light for someone else. I love B, I know she’s a light but I know I’m a light too.”

However, Rosenberg just doubled down on his comments about Rowland’s “role” in Destiny’s Child — which the Grammy winner didn’t take lightly.

“You could have rested on your laurels and just said, ‘Hey, I’m part of this iconic group. My best friend is the biggest star in the world. We’re kicking ass, we’re awesome,'” the radio personality pointed out before Rowland interrupted with her reply.

“And she best friend slash sister is also one of the big stars in the world. People only see things one way… we both shine together,” the “Brown Eyes” artist hit back. “Now everyone’s… starting to believe in this thing where… ‘Only a woman can do that, and she shines the brightest.’ My sister has knocked down doors and created positions for so many women who look like her, who are a deeper hue than her, but placed specifically for black women and black women in other places that we are grateful for. But someone else did it for them, and another group did it for us. And I’m doing it for other brown girls, so it’s a cycle and a space for all of us to open doors to each other instead of comparing ourselves. Don’t be so limited.”

For his part, Rosenberg later apologized to the “Say My Name” singer via Twitterwhile she thanked the fans because always “hav[ing] my back.”

Rowland, who rose to fame alongside the 41-year-old “Formation” artist in Destiny’s Child in the ’90s Michelle WilliamsShe’s been honest over the years about feeling like she’s been living in Beyoncé’s shadow throughout her career.

“Can you imagine what it’s like to be in a group with Beyoncé? I would just torture myself in my head,” the Brown Eyes artist continued The voice of Australia in 2020. “For example, I can’t wear this dress because they will say it’s like B. Or I can’t have a song like this because it sounds too B-like. You will be comparing anyway. ”

She explained, “I’d be lying if I said, ‘No, it never bothered me.’ This is cop. There was a whole decade, if I’m being completely honest, a decade where it was like the elephant in the room. It was the thing that would always be on my shoulder.”

For her part, Beyoncé has often praised her former Destiny’s Child bandmates — most recently praising them the “Queens” remix of their July hit “Break My Soul.” Kelly Rowland Shuts Down Beyonce Comparisons
