A suspected drunk pilot has been arrested after he landed a light plane on a motorway after apparently having run out of fuel.

John Seesing, 35, was flying a single-engine Piper Cherokee airplane to Wheeler Downtown Airport in Kansas City when he was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 70, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Seesing, who was traveling from Florida to Missouri, radioed before he touched down and hit a guardrail. He suffered minor injuries and was the only passenger on board and did not collide with any vehicle.

Highway Patrol officers at the scene determined that Seesing was “intoxicated.” He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated or impaired, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and acts of negligence, the Kansas City Star reported.

Seesing, from Prairie Village, Kansas, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

He received a student pilot certificate in January 2020 and was not allowed to fly with passengers.

Highway crews spent about three hours towing the plane and clearing debris.

According to public records, Seesing had previously committed traffic violations in 2017, including speeding and driving without a valid driver’s license.
