Kali Uchis drops “In The Lobby” for the “Isolation” anniversary

In honor of their album isolationCelebrating its fifth anniversary this week, Kali Uchi’s “In The Lobby” unearthed a previously unreleased track from that era.

“I paid the girl behind the desk to tell me what she saw in the lobby. / You made a fool of me, but you’re too proud to even say you’re sorry,” Uchis sings in the opening lines. She sets the vengeful tale on someone who’s probably betraying her.

It draws on an almost psychedelic instrumental, as Uchis’ jazzy voice is supported by multiple singers. By the time the chorus kicks in, the song’s peaceful tone belies the tension that only builds as the lyrics progress.

“What goes around will come around / Also sleep with one eye open, now (Ooh, ooh)” she goes on to warn in the song. “Cause that’s not what you want, daddy / You should’ve known the tables were turning (Ooh, ooh) / But soon enough you’ll learn (Ooh, ooh) / Yeah, that’s not what you.” want , daddy.”

Uchis was already successful this year and released her album. Red moon on Venus, and goes on to tease the fact that she’s also recorded a very different LP entirely in Spanish. Only time will tell when she decides to release the second one.
