FLORISSANT, Mo.—When visiting the fruit and vegetable department of the Schnucks Store along Shackleford Road in Florissant, you would expect to find lettuce and tomatoes. But on some special days you might see some pizazz (and we don’t mean the apples).
Store associate Johnathan Heinle is known by customers and colleagues for getting down to business.
“And the fact that the clients come in and they absolutely love me for it is just an amazing feeling,” he said.
And when Michael Jackson was on the radio last Monday night?
Customer Quiana Garnett was there and dug up the performance. It now has more than 70,000 views on Facebook. Commentators said everything from “give this man a raise” to “put him on America’s Got Talent.”
“Should this opportunity arise, I would seize it immediately,” says Heinle. “Because I just love making my customers happy.”
Heinle wants people to know he’s on the autism spectrum, and he’s proud that it helps him be himself.
“The difference between someone who is on the spectrum and someone who is neurotypical. The neurotypical feel they need to change in order to impress other people. We do not do that. We’re just going to be ourselves,” he said.
And his employer is happy to give him the stage.
“It’s what I love Schnucks‘ said Heinle. “Having even my own manager encouraging me to do this is just the best thing.”
Heinle says dancing makes the workday fly by and he doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.
“If you’re happy with who you are, just be that person,” he said. “You shouldn’t be ashamed of being yourself.”
