A jury has begun deliberations on a civil trial involving the ex-president Donald Trump is accused of raping and defaming a columnist in a dressing room.

The nine-member jury began deliberating E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit against Trump at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan.

Six men and three women will decide whether to hold 76-year-old Trump liable for Carroll’s allegations that he raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s.

If a jury finds Trump liable, they will determine how much money ex-President Carroll, 79, owes for the damage. Trump will not face jail time as this is not a criminal trial.

“I stress to you that this is a civil damages trial,” US District Judge Lewis Kaplan told the jury while leading the deliberations. “It’s not a criminal case.”

The verdict must be unanimous.

In Monday’s closing arguments, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, argued that Carroll was “exactly” Trump’s type and that he chose not to appear at the trial because “he knows what he did.”

Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina called Carroll’s case a “fiction” and accused her of trying to boost sales for her 2019 memoir.

“What E. Jean Carroll has done here is an affront to justice,” Tacopina said. “She abused this system by making a false claim based on money, status and political reasons, among other things.”

Carroll testified for three days, and two women who said she told them immediately after the alleged rape also took the stand. Two other women testified that Trump fondled and kissed them in separate incidents.
