Jurgen Klopp got very emotional during the bus parade after the Champions League final, greeting the thousands of Liverpool fans who turned out despite the painful defeat and exciting scenes in Paris on Saturday night.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid at the Stade de France, while there was an even worse situation outside the stadium, with fans being barred from entering for hours before the game, being brutalized by the police and then not being defended by the same police after the game when there was a spate of raids.

Despite a miserable trip to Paris for many, the team were greeted by a huge crowd on Sunday as they displayed the FA Cup and League Cup trophies won that season.

Klopp was touched by the participation of the Red supporters and thanked them emotionally for their commitment.

“Without a doubt no club in the world – this world – lost the Champions League final the night before and people come here in the form they are, in the mood they are. Absolutely outstanding,” said Klopp at the parade on Sunday.

“This is the best club in the world – I don’t care what other people think!

“I wasn’t sure what to expect. We talked about it before: “What are we going to do?” You have to plan something like that. You can’t just decide to parade. But I was hoping we would find something like this, it’s absolutely amazing.

“It’s the greatest sign you can give to the world. Yes, we won two competitions, great, but we didn’t win the last two – and these people don’t forget, they know exactly what a shift the boys have made. Absolutely unbelievable. It’s such a boost for everything to come. Unbelievable.’

Adding to what Reds fans have had to deal with from French authorities and the police, Klopp said: “I’m proud of the players but I’m proud of these people to be honest. Unbelievable. Some things happened at the stadium yesterday that no one understood, our families were in trouble, all those things.

“Now we come here and see that, when you see people’s eyes, it’s incredible. I love you all!

‘And I’m not drunk, not a little, just emotional!’
