Jurgen Klopp says he is “delighted” that James Milner will stay at Liverpool beyond the summer after the midfielder agreed a year extension to his contract at Anfield.

Milner, 37, first joined Liverpool in 2015 and is one of just three players at the club, along with captain Jordan Henderson and striker Roberto Firmino, to have been in the first-team prior to Klopp’s arrival.

The former England international is the fourth highest-grossing player in Premier League history, having won the league title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and Carabao Cup once each in his seven years with Liverpool won far.

His contract was due to expire on June 30 but will now remain on the Liverpool squad for at least another 12 months.

“I’m delighted to be staying for another season,” Milner told “I never took playing for this club for granted and I never will.

“One overwhelming feeling for me – and an extremely important one in this process – was the belief that I still had something to contribute to the team. The gaffer was clear about what he was thinking and that was a major factor in my contract renewal.

“As long as I can still play my role, it’s not easy to get away from it. Now that’s signed, I’m looking forward to getting back together with everyone, refocusing and going again. It’s a brilliant dressing room to be a part of.’

For Klopp, the combination of Milner’s leadership skills and technical prowess meant he was desperate to have the former Manchester City and Leeds United player in his squad for another season.

“I am happy about this news. It’s important for us – all of us,” Klopp told

“A lot is written about James’ leadership qualities and his influence in the dressing room and that is of course right and justified, but nobody should overlook his quality on the pitch where he continues to play at a level that means we just take it I can’t afford to lose him.

“His professionalism is the benchmark for any athlete and that’s why he sets the tone for this team with his skill and attitude.”
