The Reds will take on City in the Premier League at the Etihad this weekend and are looking to level a one-point deficit with eight games to go before playing the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley the following Saturday.
Both teams have had excellent seasons so far and could make history if they continue their strong form in the final weeks of the season. Liverpool have already won the Carabao Cup and could reach an unprecedented quadruple if they can also win the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, while Guardiola’s men are still struggling for a triple of the last three trophies.
Asked how difficult the two games against City will be, Klopp shared his thoughts on Guardiola, who also managed Bayern Munich while Klopp was in charge at Borussia Dortmund.
“If I were a different person I would probably be a bit depressed that Pep Guardiola coaches these types of teams all the time,” Klopp told liverpoolfc.com. “Maybe we could have won more titles in Dortmund if Pep hadn’t been with Bayern. Well it’s pretty much the same, imagine if he wasn’t here we could probably have won at least one more league title.
Speaking of City themselves, Klopp has spoken of his admiration for their style of play, adding that he believes Guardiola is superior to the rest as a manager.
“I respect what they do a lot, it’s a crazy football team,” said the German. “And for me the best manager in the world. So that’s a combination that makes it quite difficult. But, the good news, they are people too.”
“I couldn’t respect what they do more. I like watching them. I can’t say I love many opponents or competitors, but I really enjoy watching City. So whenever we play them, the analysis is a mix of serious work and real joy… it’s fantastic football.”
“They set it up in a special way,” added Klopp. “They make it really difficult. They make the playing field big in a few moments. They make the playing field small at the right moments. They have sensational individuals and all of that stuff. That’s the truth. I can’t hide that. But the good thing is that we’re not that bad either. So that obviously helps keep us at least at a distance.”
