The 59-year-old ended an eventful first season at Roma by guiding the club’s Europa Conference League triumph.
In the process, Mourinho has helped jumpstart the careers of former Premier League stars Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham and he is looking to bolster his squad with experienced players this summer.
Mourinho has already been reunited with Nemanja Matic, who played for the Special One at both Manchester United and Chelsea, and AS say Saul Niguez is next on his wish list.
Roma came close to signing Granit Xhaka from Arsenal 12 months ago but couldn’t agree a deal with the Gunners.
Xhaka then signed a new contract after that move fell through and with no sign of Roma wanting to rekindle their interest, according to Mourinho AS, will turn their attention to Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez instead.
The Spain international joined Chelsea on a year’s loan last summer but failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.
He was sent off at half-time in his debut appearance at Chelsea, with Thomas Tuchel later admitting he was far from the pace, making just five Premier League games in total.
Saul has since returned to Atletico but is unlikely to feature prominently in Diego Simeone’s plans for next season.
Atletico would be willing to loan the player back but Roma would have to pay the Spanish club a significant chunk of the 27-year-old’s salary back to allow a move.
