Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged the club to sign Christian Eriksen who has been linked with a move to rivals Manchester United.
Eriksen will become a free agent when his short-term contract with Brentford expires on June 30 and the attacking midfielder has been linked with various Premier League clubs.
On Tuesday it was reported that the 30-year-old had been offered a contract by United, with Erik ten Hag seeing him as an alternative to first-choice transfer target Frenkie de Jong, who is reluctant to leave Barcelona.
But Enrique believes United’s fierce rivals Liverpool should also throw their hat in the ring.
“Another interesting player who could be our solution for our midfield and doesn’t spend anything on [Eriksen] is a free agent,” the Spaniard said on his Instagram story.
“He’s a short-term solution, but then we can wait [Jude] Bellingham next season. He will play when he deserves to play like everyone else.
“Eriksen is a top player and I think he can fight for a place in our squad. The season is very long.
“He’s a player like Thiago, but maybe a little more offensive. But Thiago is our magician.’
On Thursday it was reported that Liverpool would not sign any more players after buying Calvin Ramsay as almost the entire transfer budget will be spent on striker Darwin Nunez.
However, Jurgen Klopp is keen to add another midfielder and will happily wait until next summer when the club will have more funds to sign a star player like Dortmund’s Bellingham.
But Eriksen, who has also been linked with staying at Brentford or rejoining Tottenham, could offer the Reds a good short-term option.
After suffering cardiac arrest at last summer’s European Championships, the Denmark international has worked his way back to full fitness and joined the Bees in February, where he proved he hadn’t lost his magic touch.
He has one goal and four assists in just 11 games and since his Brentford debut only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard have created more chances in the Premier League.
As for Eriksen’s preferences, the player likes to take his time deciding his next club, saying: “I have different offers and options that we consider and then we make a decision.
“I’ll turn on my cell phone. I know my agent well enough that if something interesting comes up, he’ll call me, and if he doesn’t, he won’t call me.’
