The accident happened around 1 p.m. at the intersection of 8375 South and State Streets, according to police, FOX 13 reported.
Officers responded to the scene and determined that the pedestrian, a 15-year-old girl, had died from her injuries. Officials said she was a student at Jordan High School, which is about two miles south of the crash site.
Police have not released the victim’s name, however a GoFundMe created to help her family with funeral expenses identified her as Jennifer Flores. An official spokesman for GoFundMe confirmed to FOX 13 News that the page is valid.
How the accident happened is not yet known; an investigation is underway.
Police said 16 students from Hillcrest High School were on board the bus. Both Jordan High School and Hillcrest High School are located in the Canyons School District.
District Superintendent Rick Robins issued a statement after the incident:
“The loss of a child – at any time – is heartbreaking for a community. Today, the entire Canyons District community mourns the loss of one of our beautiful and valued students who died in a car-pedestrian accident involving a school bus. Canyons District offers our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, teachers and school staff who are dealing with the pain and loss of a loved one. As Superintendent, I want our community to know that counseling services are available for students, faculty and staff who are dealing with difficult emotions following the incident. The death of a student can certainly evoke feelings of anxiety or stress as peers try to cope with the grief. We encourage parents to talk to their children about their feelings and to contact the school or district office if they need additional help to support their student. This is a difficult time for all of us and we appreciate the support that has already been shown to our school community.”
