Jon Stewart Reawakens ‘Harry Potter’ Goblin Speech and Anti-Semitism

Goblin’s Harry Potter has long been criticized as a well-hidden anti-pattern, an idea that has recently gained more attention thanks to Jon Stewart. Speaking on his podcasts, Stewart made a comparison between Potter movies about elves (race of secret, unreliable bankers) and classic anti-disease caricatures.

“It was one of those things where I saw it on screen and I was expecting the crowd to be like, ‘Damn it, [Rowling] Stewart said. “And everyone was like, ‘Mage.’ It is really strange.”

The film depicts goblins with oversized, hooked noses that resemble Nazis propaganda cartoons. Of course, JK Rowling didn’t invent this piece of supernatural imagery on its own. Harry Potterworld building of drawn words centuries of European folklore, not to mention other fantasy novels and movies. But this particular folk detail has an insulting connotation and continues to the present time Magical Creatures franchise, which does not appear to have been Rowling or Warner Bros.

Following Stewart’s comments, Campaign against anti-Semitism posted a statement describing Harry Potter’s elves as “the product of a centuries-old association between the Jews and the strange and evil creatures of folklore, as well as money and finance. ” At the same time, they defend Rowling as a “tireless defender of the Jewish community” in real life, showing that Harry PotterThe implicit meaning of the rebuttal is accidental.

This comment about Harry PotterGoblin reflects broader concerns about the franchise’s depiction of underrepresented minorities across the board, including lack of Jewish characters. Many of the book’s non-white characters are considered at best tokenistic, and at worst racist or stereotypical. Eg, Cho Chang’s name, or Nagini’s role in Magical Creatures. Meanwhile, Rowling’s international world has faced harsh criticism, including opposition against her simplified usage Native American folklore, and political incoherence of magical America.

The Daily Dot has contacted Warner Bros. to comment on this controversy.
