Jon Rahm says his Mexico Open triumph was inspired playing with the 15-time major champion Tiger Woods.

On Sunday, the Spaniard won his seventh PGA Tour title and 14th tournament overall after finishing a shot ahead of American trio Tony Finau, Brandon Wu and Kurt Kitayama on 17-under par.

So far this year, Rahm has struggled to show his best form, with his win at Vidanta Vallarta in Mexico being his first of the season.

Last month the 27-year-old played in the finals with Woods at the Masters and Rahm believes experience has been key to his recent success.

He told Sky Sports: “I think that Sunday with Tiger in Augusta gave me quite a bit of confidence. I was a bit technical in my approach. Too technical. I’m an emotion player.

“That Sunday I just hit the golf ball. Make the swings you want to make. And I shot a threesome without having my best stuff.

Rahm has idolized Woods since he was a kid, previously revealing that he had read the icon’s book following his 1997 Masters win.

After beating the 46-year-old in Ryder Cup singles at Le Golf National in 2018, Rahm described the victory as one of the best moments of his life.

In the past, the current US Open champion has vented his frustration at Woods rejecting his requests for advice on specific courses.

His win at the Mexico Open has put him back in the winners’ circle at a pivotal time on the golfing calendar, as the second major of the year – the USPGA – is due to start later this month, followed by the US Open in June and the Open in June July.

Rahm added: “It feels good to get that first win. At the beginning of the season I had a couple of chances and couldn’t finish them.

“Today was a struggle but I made it. My first wire-to-wire win. Even if it was difficult in the end, I will take it.’
