The Philadelphia 76ers missed out on all-star center Joel Embiid in their two opening second-round losses to the Miami Heat. Embiid is out indefinitely after suffering a concussion and an orbital fracture in Game 6 of the first round against the Toronto Raptors last Thursday. Currently, Embiid is out for Game 3 in Philadelphia on Friday, but the Star Center cleared the concussion log on Friday and said it participated in the team’s shootaround The Athletic Shams Charania. The MVP nominee is doing everything in his power, but his status remains undetermined for now.

The news comes after Sixers coach Doc Rivers said on Tuesday the big man was doing “a lot better” but added he didn’t want to give “false hopes” to anyone. Rivers’ post-game update after Game 3 on Wednesday night wasn’t much more optimistic.

“He was good-looking to talk,” Rivers said. “But he has so many steps to go through and I don’t think he’s completed any of them at the moment. So we just have to wait and see.”

Although Embiid missed the first two games of this series and could potentially miss the third game as well, there was internal hope within the Sixers that he could return to action at some point in the series. However, it is unclear how much optimism remains. During Wednesday’s broadcast, TNT’s Chris Haynes reported that Embiid was only just able to start using a cellphone again as the brightness in his post-concussion condition bothered him.

Embiid has had a tough postseason when it comes to injury concerns. Prior to suffering the concussion and fractured facial bone, the MVP nominee already had a torn ligament in his right thumb that will require surgery this offseason. Embiid vowed to pull through this injury and is likely eager to return to the pitch.

Embiid suffered a facial injury late in the fourth quarter of Game 6 against Toronto after being elbow rammed by Raptors forward Pascal Siakam. You can see the piece below:

The Sixers don’t seem to stand much of a chance against the Heat without their best player. So the sooner Embiid can return to the pitch for Philadelphia, the better. Joel Embiid injury update: 76ers star clears concussion log, Game 3 status still undecided, per report
