The White House announced that President Joe Biden will travel to Uvalde, Texas, on Sunday to meet the families of the victims, as police revealed there was no armed guard at Robb Elementary School at the time of the massacre.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will visit Uvalde “to mourn with the community who lost 21 lives in the horrifying elementary school shootings,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday afternoon.
“While he is there, he will meet with community leaders, religious leaders and the families of the victims.”
The Bidens “believe it’s important to show their support for the community and be there with the families of victims during this devastating time,” Jean-Pierre said.
Their planned visit was announced shortly after Texas law enforcement revealed that the elementary school’s lack of an armed guard allowed the gunman to easily walk into a building where he fatally shot 21 people.
“Initially he walked in unhindered. He wasn’t confronted by anyone,” said Victor Escalon, regional director for the South Texas Department of Public Safety. “Four minutes later, law enforcement agencies come to solve this problem.”
Escalon added Thursday that the first police officers to respond to Tuesday’s massacre retreated when the gunman fired on them and waited an hour for a SWAT team to arrive.
