J&J’s COVID vaccine factory is forced to dump even more doses

WASHINGTON — About 135 million more doses of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine from a troubled Baltimore factory must be destroyed due to quality issues, congressional panel chairmen said Thursday.

The announcement follows report in May It detailed how more than 400 million doses of vaccines manufactured at an Emergent BioSolutions facility had to be disposed of. The doses, recently slated for destruction, were administered between August 2021 and February, members of the House of Representatives said.

Johnson & Johnson said in a statement Thursday that no cans produced on-site have entered the market since the factory restarted and that the company is ending its agreement with Emergent.

The cans had been put aside after they were made. The panel said J&J informed it that a batch of the recordings failed inspection, rendering them all unusable.

The factory’s troubles have impacted immunizations in areas of the world where vaccines are still in short supply, said US Rep. Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat and chairman of the COVID-19 subcommittee.

Emergent said it was “open and accommodating.” factory challenges. It noted that J&J took control of the plant after the first problems emerged and that J&J was in charge until production there ceased earlier this year.

The problem plagued Baltimore factory was shut down by the Food and Drug Administration in early 2021 due to contamination. The government then allowed production to resume in August 2021.

J&J’s vaccine was one of three first approved by US regulators to protect against COVID-19 more than a year ago. But the government has since severely restricted who can get the shot due to the small risk of rare but serious blood clots.
